Matthew 16:27-28: 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. 28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
Why will we be judged according to what we have done and not by our faith? We have to read this in the same light as James 2, which tells us we will be judged by our works and not by faith. Of course, we know that Scripture and especially Romans 3 teaches us we will be judged by our faith in Jesus and not be our works. How do we reconcile the two?
Think of it this way. Before God, we are judged innocent by faith in Jesus. But before the world, we are judged innocent by our works, because our neighbor cannot see our faith, only our works. Besides, as the writer to the Hebrews (11:6) teaches us, “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” So the person who is justified before God by faith in Jesus will also have good works in his life, which are evidence of the faith in his heart. It’s important to know this, because false teacher even today will teach like the Pharisees, that we are saved by our good works and not by faith.
And what of the last verse, that some of those standing would not see death till the Son of Man comes? When you read Matthew 24, you will see the promise of Jesus second coming is entwined with his promise that the temple in Jerusalem would be destroyed. That even foreshadowed the coming of Christ on the last day. Some of the disciples standing there would witness the destruction of Jerusalem.
What’s the message for us today? Jesus is coming again soon. All the signs have made that clear. Will you be ready when he comes? You ARE ready, if you believe in him!
Prayer: Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Come and usher in your kingdom of glory. Come and bring your people home to heaven. Come and judge the world and declare all those who believe in your righteous for your own name sake. Amen.
