Matthew 18:10: 10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.
This is the verse in the Bible that gives us a reason to believe that there are “guardian angels.” One of my favorite paintings was one that hung in the living room of my parents house. It was a painting of two small children crossing a creek over a rickety only bridge. Above them was an angel watching their every step.
I do not for a moment doubt that we have angels who watch over our children and over us. It is amazing to me that our toddlers ever make it to their childhood years, or that little boys at play ever come home safe, or that our teenagers ever make it to adulthood. The only reason they make it is because God sends his angels to watch over them. Did one of those angels make the lifeguard notice me when I almost drowned when I was nine? Someone kept me safe!
Only here Jesus gives a little different twist on the fact that these “little ones” have angels watching over them. If that is the case, he says, then do not despise these little ones! Remember the previous verses that warned against causing one of these little ones to fall from the faith. If you mess with children, be prepared to mess with their angels, who are watching over them!
Thank God for giving us angels to watch over us.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your holy angels to watch over us and over our little ones. Day by day passes and we do not notice. Sometimes I wonder how often in a single day your angels have kept me from harm and danger. Open my eyes to see that we are always under your watchful care. Amen.
