Matthew 21:33-42: 33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. 35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. 36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. 38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’ 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.” 42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
Jesus’ parable tells the story of the people of Israel in a nutshell. They beat and killed the prophets in the Old Testament who brought the word of God to them. And when God sent his own Son to call them to repentance and turn their hearts to God, they killed him, too. When the chosen people (not all of them, but most of them) rejected the Savior God sent to them, God turned to the Gentiles and gave them a share in the kingdom of heaven.
The verse Jesus quotes is the same Psalm 118 that he quoted in connection with the “hosanna” chants when he came down the Mount of Olives. Jesus is the cornerstone, the most important stone in God’s beautiful Church, the stone on which all other stones are measured and placed. If you want to be part of God’s Church, then put your faith on Jesus. On the other hand, if you reject Jesus, you have no place in God’s Church.
This story is setting a question before your heart today. “What will YOU do with Jesus?” You cannot straddle the fence when it comes to your faith in Jesus. You either trust in him for your salvation, or you reject him altogether. Jesus is either everything in your life, or he is nothing in your life. What will YOU do with Jesus?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are the cornerstone and the firm foundation for my faith! I rest all my hopes in you alone. Only in you is there forgiveness and reconciliation with God. Only in you is there hope for eternal life. Only in you will my heart find peace and rest. I know you will never reject me. My prayer is that I will never reject you. Amen.
