Matthew 3: 7-10: But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

What’s the “big sin” in your life? Most of us can identify one or two, those that we really struggle with. Sometimes thinking about those sins all the time, almost exclusively, keeps us from focusing on all the ordinary sins we commit every day. Luther taught confession well in his catechism because he lived it. He would regularly pray through the Ten Commandments, using them both to examine his sinful life and also to find reasons to give thanks to God. Try that in those mornings you wake up early but don’t want to get out of bed, or when you lie awake at night. By regularly confessing ALL our sins and finding forgiveness in Jesus, we are better prepared to handle the difficult ones as well.

But what is the really “big sin” in your life? The really big sin, and the one we must confess daily, is the self-righteous attitude of our sinful nature. John was not afraid to point that out to the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus told many parables about those who were proud of their own righteousness and looked down on others. We do that, don’t we? We look down on others. Those who don’t go to church every Sunday. Those who waste their lives in godless living. Those who actually got caught in their sin so that we could gossip about it. If we didn’t look down on them, then we would surely be reaching out to them with compassion, as sheep without a Shepherd. Looking down on others feels good because it makes us look good in our own eyes. That’s the sin of the Pharisees, the sin of self-righteousness.

It’s the really “big” sin, because it is the sin that can lead us into believing in ourselves instead of believing in Jesus. It’s the sin that allows us to be comfortable with our “little sins” and not confess or repent of them. Remember, though, that when John preached and Jesus told his parables, they were reaching out to the lost as well. In this word today, Jesus is reaching out to the hypocrite in every one of us, because he loves us.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner!. Forgive me for all the sins I commit each day, and give me your Spirit to work in my heart true repentance. Especially call me to repentance for my self-righteousness and hypocrisy, lest I fail to see the need for you and for your forgiveness. I ask this in your name. Amen.

Matthew 3: 11-12: 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

John is not underplaying baptism with these words. Baptism is powerful and is still a force in our lives for repentance every day. “Baptism means that the Old Adam in us should be drowned by daily contrition and repentance, and that a new man should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity now and forever.”

What John is emphasizing by comparison is the greatness of the Messiah, the Christ. John is not even worthy to tie his shoes. The power behind baptism is Jesus and the Spirit that he pours out on us. If it were not for Jesus, there would be no righteousness or forgiveness to be imparted in baptism. If it were not for the Holy Spirit, baptism would not have the power to create faith or to renew us in our faith. And if Jesus had not died and rose again for us, there would be nothing to hope for in the last day, when he will come and gather the wheat (believers) into his barn.

You cannot think enough or learn enough about Jesus. That’s what John preached. That’s what Matthew wrote about in his gospel. That’s what all the Bible is about, because as Jesus said, the scriptures testify about him.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, whom have I in heaven but you? Earth has nothing that I desire besides you. My strength and my heart may fail, but you are my strength and my portion forever! Thank you for making me your own through baptism, for sending me your Holy Spirit to renew me every day, and for giving me hope for heaven through faith in you. Amen.
