Matthew 3: 13-15: 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
Jesus did not need to be baptized. Baptism washes away sin, and Jesus had no sin to wash away. We cannot imagine what that must be like, to not have a guilty conscience about anything in your whole life. Jesus was innocent of sin from the time he was conceived. Mary didn’t have to deal with the terrible twos of a toddler or the rebellious teens of an adolescent. If he had committed just one sin in his life, he would have needed baptism and he would not qualify to be our Savior.
Then why did Jesus submit to baptism? He explains it to John and to us. To fulfill all righteousness. He submitted to baptism in the same way he submitted himself to everything thing God’s will required of him. He put his righteousness into baptism so that we could take his righteousness out of baptism. Paul said it better in Galatians 3:26-27. “You are all the sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus; for all of you who have been baptized into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ.”
I like to recite that passage for myself as I begin to pray the Lord’s Prayer to myself so that I remember that I am indeed God’s child through faith in Jesus. It’s a good way to begin and end the day as well. Remember your baptism. Jesus put his righteousness into baptism so that we can take his righteousness out of baptism.
Prayer: Father, dear Father, I am your child through faith in Jesus, for I am baptized into Christ and clothed with him. You see me only through his righteousness and for this reason I come boldly to your throne of grace. Bless this day and remind me to live every moment of it as your dear child. Keep me from sin and unbelief lest I bring shame to your name. What love you have shown me, that I should be called your child, but that is what I am and neither Satan or my conscience can deny it. Amen.
马太福音3:16 耶稣受了洗，随即从水里上来。天忽然为他开了，他就看见 神的灵仿佛鸽子降下，落在他身上。17 从天上有声音说：「这是我的爱子，我所喜悦的。」
Matthew 3: 16-17: 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
There is a lot to learn in these two short verses. First, we see our Triune God as clearly as he had ever revealed himself in Scripture up until this point. Evidence of a Triune God, one God in three persons, was there already in the first chapter of the Bible, when God said, “Let US make man in our own image.” Here we see each person distinctly: the Father’s voice from heaven, the Son standing in the water, and the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven.
We also see God’s approval of Jesus. There is no other person about whom God the Father could say these words, “With him I am well pleased.” No other human being is perfect. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), which means we fall short of God’s approval. Except, when we are baptized into Christ and believe in him, we are clothed with Christ. Then we also have God’s approval. God can say about you, “I am well pleased with you, because you are clothed with Christ.”
One other thing. At Jesus’ baptism, the whole Triune God, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, are united in one purpose, and that is to save us from our sins. The Father is determined to give his one and only Son. The Son is determined to sacrifice himself for our sins. The Spirit is determined to put his full weight and power into what Jesus is about to do. The Triune God is all for one and one for all and all in for you!
Prayer: Thank you, Father, for giving us your one and only Son. Thank you, Jesus, for coming down to rescue us and give your life for ours. Thank you, Spirit of God, for putting your full power on Jesus for the purpose of saving us, and for bringing me to faith in Jesus. In my heart, never let me doubt your purpose to save me. In my life, keep me from saying or doing anything that would dishonor you. I ask this in your name. Amen.
