Matthew 23:16-22: 16 “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’ 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.

On the one hand, I am anxious to get out of the section about the Pharisees. Such harsh words from our dear Savior! On the other hand, I know that hypocrisy, which is pretending to be what I am not, is perhaps the greatest threat to my faith.

Here Jesus uncovers the hypocrisy of how the Pharisees treated the law. He could choose any number of commandments, but he chooses the second. Do you see how the Pharisees circumvented the law by making exceptions in almost everything? If you swore by the temple it didn’t count as real, but is you sword by the gold in the temple, it was.  Jesus showed them how ridiculous they had become by making exceptions for themselves to the law.

Do we do that? Sure we do. We don’t say, “damn you,” because it is a curse, but somehow “darn you” isn’t so bad. Maybe you’ve heard someone “swear on my mother’s grave.”  Is that an oath that is not an oath, or do we just try to circumvent the law? Whenever you use the law to try to justify your actions, you are misusing the law.

What is the main purpose of the law?  It is not to show us how good we are, but to show us how sinful we are. It’s like looking into the mirror in the morning at a face that’s drowsy with sleep and hair that is matted and saying, “What a mess.”  The law does that so that we never, ever, think that we are right with God because of our good behavior. The law does that so we cry out in our hearts, every day, “God be merciful to me, a sinner.”

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, teach me to look into the perfect mirror of your law every day to see myself as the sinner that I am. Then, and only then, will my heart cry out to you for mercy! At the same time, teach me to apply the gospel to my wounded heart as well, lest I despair and lose hope.   I ask this in your name. Amen.
