Matthew
Listen: Matthew 5:5: Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Charles Spurgeon says this about verse 4. “Not your high-spirited, quick-tempered men, who will put up with no insult, your hectoring, lofty ones, who are ever ready to resent any real or imagined disrespect, there is no blessing here for them; but blessed are the gentle, those who are ready to be thought nothing of. They are lowly-minded, and are ready to give up their portion in the earth; therefore it shall come back to them. They neither boast, nor contend, nor exult over others, yet are they heirs of all the good which God has created on the face of the earth. In their meekness they are like their King, and they shall reign with him.”
You see this gentleness and meekness in Jesus. He didn’t choose a palace when he was born, but a stable. He didn’t ride into Jerusalem on a steed, but on a donkey. He never bothered to purchase real estate or own a home. He did not shout or cry out in the street to call attention to himself. The one who was God and did not consider equality with God something to be grasped made himself nothing and chose to become a servant.
How counterintuitive to the “gospel” the world preaches! Be strong! Be assertive! Demand your rights! Lead with authority! Don’t back down for anyone! That attitude breeds nothing but conflict and trouble and despair. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, these words run so contrary to the world and to my sinful nature. Teach me that gentleness and meekness are not signs of weakness, but an exercise of your powerful grace. Let me find joy in serving others, as you found joy in humbling yourself even to the cross. Amen.
Matthew
Listen: Matthew 5:6: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
What does the world hunger and thirst for? For success and riches. For being noticed on Facebook. For being popular in school, or starting on the basketball team. The people of this world, and we too, when we allow our sinful natures to control us, hunger and thirst after those things what will never satisfy us. Even when we get what we want, we will only want more.
But the new person inside of us, where our Christian character is made, hungers and thirs for righteousness. We hunger and thirst for the righteousness of Jesus, because only in that perfect righteousness will our hearts be filled and want no more. It satisfies us more than anything else in this world ever could. As the psalmist once said, “My cup overflows.”
The new person inside of us also hungers and thirsts after righteousness in our own lives. We want to live for Jesus. We want to love our neighbor as ourselves. We want to shine like lights and be the salt of the earth. We long for this because no matter how hard we try, we can never achieve it in this life.
“For they will be filled.” Someday we will be with Jesus in heaven, where the book of Revelation says that we will serve him day and night in his temple. Then we will be perfect as Jesus is perfect! Every day we will be fountains of righteousness overflowing to others, and they to us. Don’t you long for that day to come?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, cover us with your righteousness so that we are holy in the sight of God. Fill us with your righteousness, so that we can ever become more like you. And when you come again, bring us to that perfect place, where righteousness and only righteousness will forever rule. Amen.
