马太福音5:9使人和睦的人有福了！因为他们必称为 神的儿子。
因为我们与上帝和好了，并且因为上帝的子民看到了基督里面的和平之美，所以我们完全有资格成为使人和睦的人。下面是英国一位著名的圣经学者威廉·巴克莱（William Barclay）对这节经文的评论。
“是使人和睦的人有福了，而不一定是爱好和睦的人有福。经常发生的是，如果一个人以错误的方式爱和睦，他会制造麻烦而不是和睦。例如，我们可以允许威胁存在，默许危险局势的发展，而我们的理由是，为了和平，我们不想采取任何行动。许多人认为他爱和平，而实际上他为未来积累麻烦，因为他拒绝面对问题，不采取所需要的行动，圣经所称的和睦的祝福，并非来自逃避问题；而是来自面对，处理和解决这些问题。八福中的这一福并不是因为我们害怕麻烦不敢面对问题，被动地接受现状，而是积极的面对问题，去制造和睦，哪怕通往和睦的道路充满了许多争战”。

Listen: Matthew 5:9: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Because we are at peace with God and because God’s people see the beauty of peace within the body of Christ, we are perfectly qualified to be peacemakers. I found this commentary by William Barclay on this verse.
“The blessing is on the Peace-makers, not necessarily on the peace-lovers. It very often happens that if a man loves peace in the wrong way, he succeeds in making trouble and not peace. We may, for instance, allow a threatening and dangerous situation to develop, and our defense is that for peace’s sake we do not want to take any action. There is many a person who thinks that he is loving peace, when in fact he is piling up trouble for the future, because he refuses to face the situation and to take the action which the situation demands. The peace which the Bible calls blessed does not come from the evasion of issues; it comes from facing them, dealing with them, and conquering them. What this beatitude demands is not the passive acceptance of things because we are afraid of the trouble of doing anything about them, but the active facing of things, and the making of peace, even when the way to peace is through struggle.”
To be a peace-maker takes courage and tact and gentleness. I cannot think of a better way for children of God to distinguish themselves in this world.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you reconciled me to God through your death on the cross. I have such peace in my heart that it takes my breath away. Give me the Christian character that I need to not only live at peace with my neighbors, but to be a peace-maker especially within your body, the Church. I ask this in your name. Amen.

Listen: Matthew 5:10-12: Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad,because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Imagine that you are a spectator in the Roman arena, and the warm up to the main event of gladiators fighting each other, there is an event to warm up the crowd. A group of Christians are led into the arena including men, women and children. Everyone knows what is about to happen. Lions will be released from their cages, hungry lions who can’t wait to be the first to begin the carnage. As the crowd quiets for the moment, they hear a song being sung by the handful of Christians. In strong voices they unite to praise the name of Jesus. Their voices show more hope than fear. They know that death will come in a moment, but eternal life will be theirs forever. In just a few moments, they will see Jesus face to face.
If you scanned the faces of the people in the crowd, you would see troubled faces. Who are these people who care so little for the now and have so much hope for the eternal? What did they have that the Romans lacked? Our courage and our joy and our patience in the face of persecution gives us an opportunity to speak our faith. Peter said, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander (1 Peter 3:15-16).” The Romans wondered why Christians could face death with joy and hope. So do your neighbors. So tell them!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to see that the difficult moments of my life, even when I am ridiculed for the sake of the gospel, only gives me opportunity to thank and praise you more. Thank you, because I don’t have to live for this life, but can hope for eternal life. Praise you, because I can share with those who do not know you that you are my Hope, my Joy, my Crown. Amen.
