Matthew

Listen: Matthew 6:25-32:  “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

We live in a land of such abundance, and still we worry. We probably worry more than previous generations who got by on so much less.  When I was in grade school, my younger brother and I shared a bedroom and we shared a dresser.  The dresser had three drawers. I had the top drawer, he had the second, and the third was for a few spare items.  For school, I had two pair of pants, two shirts, and a few pieces of underwear and socks.  It all fit into one drawer.  I can’t remember worrying about what I would wear. And my mother would wash clothes only on Monday for a family of six plus the relative that lived with us and helped on the farm. The point is that we can have too much and still be worried.

I wonder what it was like in Jesus’ day?  You probably had one robe and a few other items. What was it like for food? You didn’t have freezers or refrigerators so that you really did get by on your “daily bread.” You went to the market to buy your food for the day and that was it.  And Jesus said, “Don’t worry. Trust that your heavenly Father knows what you need.  He feeds the birds and clothes the plants of the field with splendor. How much more will he provide for us, who are his dear children by faith?

The next time you think to yourself, “I have nothing to wear,” take another look at your closet and your dresser.  When you think, “There’s nothing in the house to eat,” look at your pantry and think how many days or weeks you could live just on what you have stored away.  And if you really do have a need, remember to bring it to your Father in heaven who gives us our daily bread without fail.

Prayer:  Father, a walk around my house reminds me that I live in plenty and not in want. Yet in my sinful nature I want to worry about even the little things in my life. Give me a heart that trusts in your gracious providing and to receive with thanksgiving my daily bread without complaining.  I ask this in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Matthew

Listen: Matthew 6:33-34:  33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

These words offer us simple and practical advice for our life. First, get your priorities straight. Second, take care of today and let tomorrow take care of itself.  In business today, there has been an emphasis for companies to establish their “core values” and then make their decisions based on those values. For example, an airline industry might have “safety first” for one of it core values. If it’s your core value, then time and money are spent in that area to make sure you run a safe airline.

What would you set as your “core values” for your life as a Christian? Jesus really establishes the number one core value for us. God’s kingdom and his righteousness comes first. Everything else comes second. So if that is your core value, then how does that affect the decisions you are going to make today?  As you make out your daily schedule, what will you include and what will you keep off that schedule?

Are you game to do that just for today?  Write down a few words that would describe your core values for your life. Then make out your schedule for today to reflect those values. And tomorrow?  Well, let tomorrow take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank you for prioritizing my life for me! If I listen to the voices of the world around me, I would be completely confused as to what is really important in life. In fact, if I listened to those voices, it would be all about me.  Teach me to live, not for myself, but for the only ONE who makes my life complete. Teach my heart to trust that I can no worry and leave tomorrow in your hands.  I ask this in your name.  Amen.
