Matthew:  8: 1-4:  When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

I love this story! Can you imagine yourself in the sandals of the leper? Lepers were unclean. When people met you, they crossed the street to avoid you. You probably hadn’t felt a human being touch you for years. Understand that leprosy in Jesus’ day was a communicable disease. Who would want to risk getting leprosy?

I don’t know about you, but human touch is important to me. Hugs from grandchildren. Hugs from children. Warm handshakes on Sunday morning. Even those touches in the middle of the night from my wife, making sure I am still breathing! When Jesus heard this man’s desperate cry for help, a cry of faith because he knew Jesus COULD heal him, Jesus’ heart went out to him. He reached out and touched the man.

I am thankful for a Savior who took on human flesh and became touchable and able to touch others. I am thankful for a Savior who does not think that I am too unclean to embrace in his redeeming love. I am thankful for a Savior that I will one day see face to face, a Savior who will embrace me in his arms and greet me in eternity as his dear brother.

Prayer:  Dear Jesus, once again you show me your warm and embracing love in this story. No one is so sick that you cannot heal them. No one is so unclean that you would not embrace them in love.  You are not only able to cleanse me from my sins, but you are willing to do so as well.  I cannot wait to feel your warm in embrace in heaven, when I will find rest in your everlasting arms.  Amen.

Matthew

Listen: Matthew:  8: 14-17:  14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. 16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

Jesus came not only to take away our sins, but to take away the consequences of our sins. Sometimes we will experience that healing in our bodies in this life. When you get a report from the doctor that your cancer is in remission, or when you simply recover from a terrible case of the flu, do not think that it was only the medicine or only your body healing itself. Jesus is still the physician of our bodies and our souls.  However, just as we wait eagerly for that day when he will come again and sin will be no more, so we eagerly wait for that day when he will come and the consequences of sin will forever be gone.

Matthew quotes the famous verse from Isaiah 53. What does it mean that he “took up our infirmities and bore our diseases?”  Jesus could not remove the consequences of sin without first removing the sin itself.  The verse from Isaiah continues by saying, “He was wounded for OUR transgressions;  he was crushed for our iniquities.”  Jesus took into his body our sin when he died on the cross and rendered it powerless.  That is the greatest healing of all!

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, I look forward to that day when the “sun of righteousness will come with healing in its wings.”  Every infirmity, every handicap, and every sorrow will be gone forever!  But until that day comes, I will live each day in joy knowing that all my sins are already forgiven in you, my Savior.  Amen.

Matthew

Listen: Matthew:  8: 18-22:  18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

It’s easy to say that you will follow Jesus, when it is the popular thing to do, or when it is convenient to do so. But what about when it is not? When Jesus gives these answers, we have to assume that he can see the intentions in the heart of these individuals. In the first case, the man was eager to follow Jesus.  But did he know what he was going to be giving up? In his ministry, Jesus did a lot of “couch surfing” in homes of his friends, like Lazarus, or just slept outdoors in places like the Garden of Gethsemane.  You might even say that Jesus was “homeless.”  In the case of the second, Jesus’ answer sounds severe. We can assume that the individual would always find an excuse for not following Jesus today.

Do you want to follow Jesus? Here are some things you might expect. Some people may not think you are not fit to run for public office because of your Christian values. You may have to quit your job, if you boss is expecting you to do something that is not honest. You may be passed by for promotion, if you think your faith and family are more important than work.  In reality, are you ready to give up everything for Jesus?

A more important point that these verses make is that Jesus gave up everything for us. He gave up his place in heaven to live among us as a homeless, traveling preacher. He gave up his glory in heaven for the glory of the cross. He gave it all up for you and for me, that we might claim a mansion in the skies with him forever.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, I pray that nothing in this world or in this life would capture the place in my heart that belongs to you alone. You are my joy and my salvation. In you I have life and I have life to the full. Thank you for reminding me that following you may not be easy, but it is always rewarding.  Amen.
