马太福音8:23-27  不要害怕生活中的暴风雨

Listen: Matthew:  8: 23-27: 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Of course, we see Jesus in the context of all of Scripture, from his conception by the miracle of the Holy Spirit through his resurrection and ascension into heaven.  Of course, he is the Son of God! Why didn’t the disciples see this? But picture this scene on the Sea of Galilee, where violent storms can pop up in a minute.  The boat is rocking furiously in the storm to the point that the disciples, some of whom had been fishermen on this lake, were terrified.  What was Jesus doing? He was so worn out from the the events of that day that he was sleeping soundly in the boat.

Weakness and almighty power displayed in the same person.  The man who cannot stay awake is also God, who neither slumbers or sleeps.  The eternal God subjected himself to twenty four hours in which to do his work and catch his sleep as well.  God took on flesh so that in his humanity, the Son of God could be inflicted with pain and experience death on the cross.  “What kind of man is this?” they wondered. “Even the winds and the waves obey him!”  We still wonder at this today, not in unbelief, but with the amazement of faith.

What does this mean?  It means that God is with us every day in a special way, because the Son of God is still true God and true man today, but now in his glorified state. We don’t have to be afraid of the sudden storms that rise in our lives. We do not have to cower in fear of what the next moment will bring. Let the other shoe fall, because Jesus is always near.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, be with me through the storms of my life, so that I do not have to be afraid.  Be with me also through the peaceful times, lest I become complacent and forget that I need you just as much even then. I ask this in your name.  Amen.

马太福音8:28-34 胜过魔鬼

Listen: Matthew:  8: 28-34: 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”  30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” 32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

Galilee was sometimes call “Galilee of the Gentiles” because there was a lot of Roman and pagan influence in that area. That was especially so of the region of the Gadarenes.  You see the evidence of this in the story. They were growing pigs, which the Jews didn’t do, because they were unclean animals to them. And when Jesus performed this miracle and sent the demons into the herd of pigs, the people in the area pleaded with him to leave them.

We see evidence that our culture is becoming more and more godless, and in some ways, even more pagan.  Crosses aren’t welcome in public places. Christians in politics are criticized because their values are no longer mainstream. To proclaim Jesus as the Savior of the world and the only one through whom we can be saved is labeled as bigotry. We shouldn’t be surprised by these things because Satan will always try to keep Jesus out wherever and whenever he can.

But he won’t win. He couldn’t keep Jesus from casting demons out of the men afflicted by them and into the herd of pigs. He couldn’t keep Jesus from going to the cross to pay for the sins of the world. He couldn’t keep Jesus from rising again on the third day to seal the victory over sin, death and himself. Jesus wins every time and so do we by faith in him.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank you for reminding me that you have command over Satan and all his evil angels. Satan cannot accuse me any longer, because you have justified me through your death and resurrection. Be with me today so that when Satan tempts me, I can tell him to get lost in your name.
