Matthew 14:22-24:  Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

Have you ever taught a seminar that lasted all day?  Or spent the whole day in a classroom of children? The teachers make it look easy, but it is not. Teaching is exhausting, and I imagine that at the end of that day, Jesus was exhausted, not only physically but mentally as well. And yet Jesus found time to be alone and to spend some time in prayer with his heavenly Father.

Why did he do this? Because he needed that quiet time with his Father in heaven. Remember that Jesus was and is fully human. His body and his mind and his spirit responded to the stressors of this life in the same way that ours do. He need and he longed for spiritual refreshment. Remember, too, that he had just learned that John the Baptist had been murdered. That’s why he spent time in prayer.

He also did it for us. He was the prayer warrior that all of us would like to be. Like the disciples in the garden, we fall asleep because our flesh is weak. Or we mix a drink and turn on the television and watch something mindless. Or we just forget. When we see such verses that describe the perfect Savior for us, remember that his righteousness covers us and hides all our sins from the eyes of God.

Prayer:  Dear Jesus, thank you for this lesson in prayer, teaching me how to handle the stressful moments in my life by spending time with you in prayer. And thank you, for being perfect in your prayer life so that I can wear your robe of righteousness by faith.  I pray in your name.  Amen.

Matthew 14:25-33 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.  27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.  28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said.  Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

When Peter thought it was Jesus, he asked to walk to him on the water. He took a few steps and then saw the big wave coming. How typical of our faith in Jesus as well! We trust in Jesus in good times and in certain times, but when the big wave of adversity hits, we doubt. It is so easy to see ourselves in Peter! Give Peter this much. When he was drowning, he cried out to the Lord to save him.

What I want to focus on today is Jesus. The miracle shows us again that he is the Son of God, Almighty God. Even the wind and the waves obey him! But do you see something else in Jesus?  I do.  I see his infinite patience with his disciple who doubted. He didn’t tell Peter to sink or swim. He reached out to save him.

Don’t you see? Jesus does the same for us. Doubting is not the same as not believing at all. It’s having a weak faith. We are saved, not because we have such a strong faith, but because we have such a powerful Savior. Even a small faith in a big Savior is a saving faith.

But I do not want to be content with a small faith, an uncomfortable faith. That’s why we look at Jesus and not at ourselves. The more we see Jesus, the stronger our faith will become.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, I do not want a weak faith, even though I am still saved by such a faith. Give me a faith that trusts not in myself, but only in you. Give me a faith that knows I am saved, even though I am sinful through and through. Give me a faith that is sure of heaven, because you have done everything to save me.  I ask this in your name. Amen.
