马太福音 16:17-18 教会建造在磐石上
Matthew 16:17-18: 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
马太福音 16:17-18 耶稣对他说：“西门·巴·约拿，你是有福的！因为这不是属血肉的指示你的，乃是我在天上的父指示的。 我还告诉你，你是彼得，我要把我的教会建造在这磐石上；阴间的权柄（权柄：原文是门）不能胜过他。
The name Peter in Greek (Petros) means “rock.” Jesus is using a play on words here. He is not saying that he is going to build his Church on Peter. If that were the case, the Church would have a shaky foundation! Jesus said, “You are PETROS and on this PETRA I will build my Church.” What was Jesus talking about? He was talking about the confession of the gospel that Peter had Jesus made. The Church is built on Jesus and the gospel which proclaims him.

And the gates of Hades or hell will not overcome it. For many years the picture that entered my mind was of God’s people standing inside an impregnable fortress, protected from the devil’s attacks. That’s not a bad picture, but it is not the one that Jesus is using here. Instead, he pictures Satan inside a fortress and the gates cannot prevail against the preaching of the gospel. When you share your faith in Jesus and teach the gospel, Satan’s kingdom begins to crumble. Satan has no power against the gospel!

Sometimes I think that in our churches, we hunker down within the walls of our church and are afraid to do battle out there in the world against Satan. We are an army of Christian soldiers who hold high the banner of Christ. Don’t be afraid to go out and proclaim the gospel boldly! Christ is building his Church and the gates of Hades cannot prevail against it!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, remind us, your people, that we are an army that you have equipped with the most powerful weapon that the world has ever seen. Your gospel is powerful, powerful to change hearts, powerful to destroy Satan’s hold on people’s souls. Open our lips that we may praise you before the world and proclaim the gospel to as many people as we can. Amen.
