Matthew 17: 1-8:After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. 4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
Matthew, Mark and Luke all record this story. It is an important story. What happened on the mountain was important for Jesus. He was about to go to Jerusalem to suffer and die. In his human nature it must have been like one of those soldiers as they made their way on small boats to the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Everyone of those soldiers wandered if they would die on that beach. Jesus KNEW that he would die.
So his heavenly Father gave his Son this pep talk to encourage him for the task ahead. He clothed him in glory and spoke from heaven to affirm again that Jesus was his one and only Son. When Jesus was hanging on the cross, forsaken by God for our sins, he could remember the words his Father spoke at his baptism and at his transfiguration.
Moses and Elijah were there as well, the two great prophets from the Old Testament. The other gospels said they spoke to Jesus about his journey to the cross. All that they had prophesied, all the plans that God had made from the beginning of time and before, were going to be carried out by Jesus over the next few weeks. The day of his death and then his resurrection would change God’s verdict on mankind. It would be the greatest victory ever.
Today is Memorial Day, a day in which we remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Remember as well your Savior, who gave his life for your freedom from sin and death and hell.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, today we honor all those who fought and who died for our country. We thank you for the freedom you have preserved for our nation. At the same time, this would mean little if it were not for your sacrifice. Thank you for being willing to suffer and die and rise again for us! Amen.
