Matthew 20: 29-34: As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?”he asked. 33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” 34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

In so many of the miracles that Jesus performed, the healing happened “immediately.”  Men who were blind went to twenty-twenty vision. Women sick in their beds got up and served Jesus and his disciples.  Men lame from birth leaped up and walked.

I ministered to a young man once who was partially paralyzed from birth. He walked with two braces and canes. He got involved in a “healing ministry” group who told him that God would heal him, if only he had faith. When I talked to him, he insisted he was healed, but he still walked with canes, but insisted he was getting better every day. I hope that he didn’t stumble in his faith if he was not healed completely.

Can Jesus still heal us?  Of course. Does he make a promise that he will always heal us from every sickness and handicap? No. To make healing a condition of our faith will only end in disappointment, because at some point we will get sick and die. Or our eyes will dim.  Or our ears will fail us. Or we will lose our memory and cognitive abilities. Jesus will perfectly heal us when he comes again on the last day.

Until then, we pray and when we pray, we say, “Your will be done.”

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, give me boldness to pray in all of the circumstances of my life, including times of sickness and danger. At the same time, give me courage to bear up under the burdens of life and the wisdom to pray, as always, “Your will be done.”  Amen.
