Hebrews 2: We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
The writer to Hebrews compares the message that came from Sinai, which was accompanied with a host of angels (Deuteronomy 33:2), with the message of salvation that has come to us through Jesus. God spoke to the children of Israel on Mt. Sinai, and what God said was binding on them. As someone once quipped, “They are not ten suggestions, they are ten commandments.” If God punished his people for breaking his covenant on Mt. Sinai, how much more do we deserved to be punished if we ignore God’s message of salvation through Jesus?
The writer to the Hebrews says that this salvation was first announced by the Lord. Jesus taught God’s plan of salvation clearly. Read John 3 and here Jesus explain his plan of salvation to Nicodemus in the middle of the night. Listen to Luke 15 and the parables of the lost. How clearly he explains the plan of salvation. List to the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee in the temple. The Pharisee bragged about his good works while the tax collector begged for mercy. Who was forgiven? The tax collector. This message of salvation was confirmed by those who hard him and it was sealed by the Holy Spirit through miracles.
What’s the point? The message of Jesus eclipses the message from Sinai a hundred times over. So listen to Jesus. Learn from Jesus, the Son of God, our Savior. When you read your Bible, don’t shy away from coming back to the gospels again and again. Read the whole Bible, but spend more time listening to Jesus!
Prayer: Dear Jesus, to whom should we go? You have the words of eternal life! Let me sit at your feet and listen and learn and believe! Amen.
