Hebrews 4: And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” 5 And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”
These words take us back to creation and the Garden of Eden. Every day of creation ended with the words, “And there was evening and there was morning…” That’s how we know God created the world in six 24 hour days. However, on the seventh day, that phrase is not there. On the seventh day he rested, and he continued to rest every day after. So what does this “rest” really mean?
It means that God stopped creating and starting enjoying his creation. Remember that our God is relational God, who was a God of love from all eternity. He didn’t create Adam and Eve so that he would have someone to play with. He created them to have a relationship with them, to love them fully as only our God can love. When they sinned, he came to walk with them in the garden. I imagine that God did that every day with Adam and Eve, for as many days as there were before they spoiled it with sin. Can you imagine walking with God, as tender children walking with their dear father? And as excited as Adam and Eve must have been to walk with God, God was excited to walk with them. Because God took great delight in his creation.
Oh, how we long for that again! How we long to see God face to face and walk with him! This is what it means to enter God’s rest. And we will! When we are in heaven, we will delight in our God and our Savior and we will see him face to face. And he will take great delight in us. We will be dressed in the robes of his righteousness, and as a bridegroom delights in his bride, so our Savior God will delight in us. Oh my, what joy! We can hardly wait!
But do we have to wait? No, because even now we walk with God by faith in Jesus. Our God loves us and delights in us. He longs for that day when we will see him face to face, as much as we long to see him. We walk with him daily in his Word. We come to know him by faith more intimately as he grows our faith. The worries of this life fade away as we take that walk with him. The terrors of conscience cannot weigh us down as we experience is unconditional love.
Prayer: Father, dear Father, let me walk with you in the garden by faith each day. Surround me with your love and your promises so that I walk in your heavenly light and not the darkness of this world. I ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son, through whom you have adopted me as your dear child. Amen.
