Hebrews 6:  13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. 16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.

God came down to our level when he sealed his promise with an oath. In Abraham’s case, his glory walked through the animals that had been cut in half, sealing the promise he made to Abraham with an oath. That’s the way ancient people made their oaths. Only, it was the custom that BOTH parties of the covenant walked through together, binding each one of them to their oath. But in Abraham’s case, only God passed through. So in two things, the promise and the oath, God made Abraham sure of his promise to give him an heir, and especially the HEIR (Jesus), through whom all the nations on the earth would be blessed.

God has given us his promise to save us and he has sealed that promise for us through his Son, Jesus Christ. God cannot lie.  He cannot break his promise to forgive our sins in Jesus.  And when we step before God’s throne to ask for his forgiveness, he wants us to have the boldness of faith to say, “Father, you promised to forgive me for Jesus’ sake.”  He didn’t make his oath for his own sake, but for our sake, that we might be sure of God’s forgiveness, no matter how great our sin, no matter what the circumstances of our life might be.  Don’t be afraid to step before God’s throne of grace and say, “Father, you promised!”

Prayer:  Father, Abba Father, you promised to forgive my sins for Jesus’ sake.  I come to you with boldness, not because I have earned your forgiveness, but because you promised!  You also promised to send me your Holy Spirit, to renew my heart and mind in Christ.  Restore to me the joy of your salvation!  I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
