Hebrews 7: This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.

The writer to the Hebrews will introduce us to Melchizedek, a priest of the most high God who came out of what was then Salem (Jerusalem, which was a small town a the time) and blessed Abraham. He is quite the enigmatic figure.  His name means “king of righteousness” and he was the king of Salem, or “king of peace.” If ever there was a name and title that fit the Savior’s description, it was the priestly office of Melchizedek.

But there did he come from? How was it that there was still a priest of God Most High living in that part of the world? We don’t know anything more about him and anything we might offer would only be a guess. But because Scripture does not record his birth or death, he resembles the Son of God, who has an eternal priesthood.  And that’s the point that the writer to the Hebrews wants to make about Jesus.  Jesus is better than any of the Old Testament priests because he is a priest FOREVER after the order of Melchizedek.

I recently returned from Nepal, where the vast majority of the people are Hindu.  There are over a million gods in the Hindu religion. Almost every street had a little shrine to one god or another, at which people left little offerings along with their prayers. What a joy it is to have just one God, one Savior, one high priest through whom we can send our prayers before the throne of grace! No temple can contain him. No shrine can memorialize him.  Yet, his ears are open to our prayers day and night!   Prayer:   Lord Jesus, thank you for your promise that whatever we ask the Father in your name, he will certainly give us what we ask according to his will! Here my prayers this morning.  Bless this day and let me walk with you. Strengthen my faith through your Word. Let your holy angels be with me that the wicked foe may have no power over me.  Amen.
