Hebrews 7: 23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
Sometimes we focus too exclusively on the suffering and death of Jesus to save us and not give enough attention to what Jesus continues to do today to “save us completely.” What Jesus did to save me from my sins would come to nothing if I turned away from him and fell into unbelief. And I know how weak I am, how easily it would be for Satan to deceive me. So what confidence do I have in my salvation if that is so?
My confidence is in Jesus to not only save me from my sins, but to save me from myself, from my backsliding and my stumbling. That’s the point the writer to the Hebrews makes about the eternal high priesthood of Jesus. He always lives to intercede for us before the throne of God. How many prayers has Jesus made for me before God’s throne? How often has he pleaded for mercy when I deserved God’s wrath? Enough to save me completely. That is my confidence in my salvation. Not only did he pay the price for my redemption, but he is my friend and brother before God’s throne.
John said it so well. “But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:1-2).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, how often you have been my friend before the Father in heaven and pleaded my case! I know that everyday holds dangers from the devil, the world and my sinful nature. Be with me in all I say and think and do today. And when I do sin, be my advocate before our Father’s throne. I ask this in your name. Amen.
