Hebrews 9: Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. 2 A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4 which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. 5 Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

Do you have a picture of the sanctuary of the Old Testament in mind?  If not, go to Youtube and search for the “Old Testament tabernacle.”  You will get a pretty good guided tour of what it looked like. The visual picture that has always impressed me was the curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.  The Most Holy Place was “God’s room.” The ark of the covenant was there to remind both God and his people of their covenant relationship. In the ark was the manna, reminding them of their trip out of Egypt, where God redeemed them to be his people. There was the budding rod of Aaron, which designated him and his descendants as priests. And there were the Two Tables of the Ten Commandments as a witness to the sins of the people committed.

The curtain was a reminder that their sins separated them from God. To stand in the presence of God and of his glory, we must be holy and without sin. When we see the Ten Commandments, which remind us of our sins, then our hearts should cry out, “Lord, how can we be saved?”  And the answer to that question was given by Jesus in John 14:6:  “I am the WAY, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”  On the day he died, the curtain in the temple was shredded from top to bottom as a visual affirmation that Jesus has opened the way to heaven for us, sinful though we are.  What a striking picture for Old Testament believers and New Testament believers alike!

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, thank you for opening the way through the curtain for us, so that we may day stand in your presence and see your glory face to face!  Remind me that I am a redeemed child of God, and let me live this day and every day to ever become what I am by faith. Amen.
