Hebrews 10: 5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; 6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. 7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—I have come to do your will, my God.’” 8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

“I have come to do your will,” the Messiah said in Psalm 40. “I have come to do what no sacrifice in the Old Testament could ever accomplish.”  Think about these words when Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. He surely knew the words of Psalm 40, which described his mission so well. Yet in his human nature, he prayed that the cup of suffering might be taken from him. It shows us how terrible that suffering would be. It shook him to his very core, just thinking about it. His sweat was like drops of blood, falling to the ground.  And yet he prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.”  Just like the Messiah said in Psalm 40:  “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”

The result of the Savior’s work is described in plain and forceful words. “And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus once for all.”  That’s a verse you may want to commit to memory. “We have been made holy” means that it was done and what was done is still true today.  It was a “once for all” sacrifice that never has to be repeated. The writer to the Hebrews pounds this point home over and over again because our sinful nature wants to convince us that there must be something more that we must do to be saved. Pray harder. Go to church more. Give more.  None of those things can ever give our conscience peace and rest. Only the sacrifice of Jesus once for all can give us that peace!

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to do God’s will for me, even though it meant that you must suffer and die for my sins! I pray that in my heart I will always be convinced that this is all that I will ever need to be saved forever. And let me live my life this day as a redeemed and forgiven child of God.    Amen.
