Hebrews 11: 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.

Everywhere we turn, we are inundated with pictures and stories of the rich and the famous. Before the Oscars the elite of the film industry parade before our eyes. News magazines give more coverage to the rich and the famous than to extraordinary people who are just ordinary in their lives. The world wants to convince us that there is happiness at the end of that rainbow. In reality that rainbow only ends in a pile of dirt, just like the rest of us someday.

Moses had it all. Egypt was at that time the most glorious kingdom in the Mediterranean world. Power and riches and pleasure were there for Moses to have. But he set those things aside and chose instead to be identified with the slaves of Egypt. Why? Because he knew that real treasure cannot be had in this lifetime, but only in heaven. He would rather serve God and his people than have the riches of Egypt.

I think that Christians are extraordinary ordinary people. No one will nominate us for the who’s who list. We won’t win many awards in this lifetime. Why? Because we live by faith. Humble service to God and to our neighbor is more important than self-gratification. The only reward we really desire is the reward that is given by grace on the last day to all who believe.

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, make me a servant like you, for you became nothing so that I might be God’s child and a saint. Teach me that the pleasures of this world are fleeting and unimportant.  You are my dearest Treasure.  All I ever hope for and want to be, I have found in you.  Amen.
