Hebrews 13: 7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Carefully consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9 Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. For it is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which are of no help to those who make them a way of life. (EHV)
Tomorrow I will devote on verse 8 in more detail, because it is a passage that we could think about for a whole day and not plumb its depths. But for today, I want to take time in my heart to remember the leaders, the pastors and teachers in my life, who spoke the word of God to me.
I remember Pastor Pagels, who encouraged me to become a pastor, and who showed me in my short time in his confirmation class that the Bible was worth memorizing. Six or seven passages a day plus a section of the catechism was a normal assignment. Unfortunately, he died of a heart attack in my first year of confirmation, but it was his words of encouragement that pushed me to become a pastor. I am thankful for that, because it made me study God’s Word. I think that if I had gone to a regular university and studied law or science, I may not be a Christian today.
I am thankful for Pastor Frank, who had an endless supply of real life stories to tell about Christians who lived their faith, and for his wonderful wife, who was one of the gentlest and godliest people I ever knew. When I was at the seminary, I picked apples for work and brought her a bushel of apples. She thanked me as if God has opened up the storerooms in heaven and blessed her. I could recall many of my seminary professors, who taught with such grace to young men like myself, who thought they knew all the answers. All of these godly people have had an affect on my life, and I am thankful for everyone of them.
And most importantly, I thank my God that I had teachers who taught me the truth from God’s Word. I cannot remember a single pastor or teacher who misled me in the Word of God. What a blessing!Prayer: Father, thank you for faithful pastors and teachers who have faithfully spoken the Word of God to me! For their godly wisdom and passion, for their patience and persistence. As Jesus taught, I pray that you will send forth workers into your kingdom to plant the seeds of the gospel in the hearts of many! Amen.
