1 Corinthians 6: 12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.  (EHV)

Paul is dealing especially with the sin of sexual immorality, which is any sex outside of the bonds of marriage. Within marriage, sex is a gift from God to a husband and wife. Outside of marriage, it is always a selfish pursuit, a satisfying of a person’s desires, which have been corrupted by sin. The Corinthians, like our own culture, thought, “If it feels good, do it.” Almost no one today in our culture thinks there is anything wrong with sex “between two consenting adults.”

But Paul’s words lead us beyond just sixth commandment sins. Even good things, if we allow them to master us, can become sin.  A person who becomes addicted to dieting can harm his or her body. Exercise is a good thing until it becomes an obsession. There is nothing wrong with watching a television show, unless you start “binge” watching and you waste your precious time.  Gaming has ruined marriages and careers. “I will not be mastered by anything,” Paul says.

Is there anything in your life which wants to master you?  Of course there is. Sin always wants to make you its slave. If you are not struggling with sin in your life, you are either dead and in heaven, or you are deceiving yourself.

But God raised Jesus from the dead, and he will raise us also.  When I first read those words today, I immediately thought, “I can’t wait until Jesus comes, when sin will be no more, and my struggle will be over.” Certainly that comforting thought is in these words. But I think Paul was also referring to the here and now.  In our baptism, we were buried with Christ into death so that we could be raised from death to life by the glory of the Father (Romans 6:1-3).  You experience the power of the resurrection every day when you wake up renewed and restored to live a new life to the glory of God. “I will not be mastered by anything.” In my new self, which is resurrected in me every day, I can face my struggle with sin and not be mastered by it.

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, as long as you are with me and in me, I will not be mastered by my sinful desires. Make me humble each day to repent of the sins I struggle with. Give me hope in your forgiveness and in the resurrection on the last day.  I want to be mastered by your and your grace and not by my sin! Amen.
