1 Corinthians

Listen: 1 Corinthians 15: 12 Now if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how is it that some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is pointless, and your faith is pointless too. 15 Then we are even guilty of giving false testimony about God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise, if it were true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then it also follows that those who fell asleep in Christ perished. 19 If our hope in Christ applies only to this life, we are the most pitiful people of all. (EHV)

Our resurrection on the last day and our forgiveness is inseparably linked to Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. If you deny Jesus’ resurrection, you deny our own resurrection. If you deny our own resurrection, you deny Jesus’ resurrection, and the forgiveness of sins, which Jesus’ resurrection has guaranteed us. Paul says that faith without faith in the resurrection is worthless and empty.

Why was this an issue among the Corinthians? It was probably linked to the teachings of Gnosticism, which viewed all material things as evil.  The survival of the soul after death replaced the hope in the resurrection. The logical conclusion to such a philosophy would be that Jesus didn’t really rise from the dead physically, but only spiritually.

But that’s not what the Bible teaches. Job said it so beautifully: “I know that my redeemer lives,     and that in the end he will stand on the earth. 26 And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; 27 I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another.”  Jesus’ resurrection was not a pretend resurrection, but a real resurrection. Our resurrection on the last day will not be a pretend resurrection, but a real resurrection.

Prayer:   Gracious Savior, risen Lord, I look forward to that day when this rusted out body of mine will be made whole and perfect in the resurrection on the last day.  And most of all, thank you for making sure my complete forgiveness by your resurrection from the dead!  Amen.
