Mark 10:32-34: They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”  (NIV)

I am always amazed, every time I read these words, at how often Jesus told the disciples plainly what would happen to him—and they didn’t get it. They weren’t waiting for the resurrection on the third day. But would I have understood it any better? Probably not. It’s easy for me to judge the disciples because I am on the other end of the resurrection. It’s perfectly plain for me to see, because I have been to the empty tomb.

It’s like being on a journey and getting lost, and lost again, and finally reaching your destination. When you look back at your journey, you are surprised that you missed all the markers and signs that pointed you in the right direction. I am sure the disciples looked back and said to themselves, “How did we miss that?”

That’s why Jesus’ resurrection is so important. Without the resurrection, Jesus was just another teacher. Without the resurrection, his death was only a tragedy. Without the resurrection, our faith would be in vain, and we would still be in our sins (1 Corinthians 15:17). So I thank my Savior today for his death and especially his resurrection. He never flinched. He never veered from the mission his heavenly Father sent him on.  His love for us made him follow the map his Father had drawn for him, a map that did not end at the cross, but at the empty tomb.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for paving the way that led to the cross and to the empty tomb. Thank you also for leading me on that path that leads to salvation. Amen.
