Matthew 13:44-46: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
Jesus once again shares with us a simple truth that is profound at the same time. The treasure is the gospel, the good news which we have in Jesus. This treasure is not just one of our treasures, but it is the most important treasure of all. Nothing at all in our life can even come close to it.
But do we give this treasure the attention that it deserves in our life? Sadly that is not always the case. Sports tournaments on weekends are more important than Sunday worship, and Christian people are sucked into those things. Our careers might be so important that it not only demands seventy hours a week, but it occupies our minds most of the rest of the time as well. Where is there room for Jesus and his gospel? Our children become the center of our universe and we neglect our relationship with Jesus.
Notice than none of these things are really evil things. In fact, they are good things for the most part. But good things can become idols, too, if we let them come between us and Jesus. The prevailing attitude in our culture today is that a little religion is a good thing as long as it doesn’t dominate our lives. In these two little parables, Jesus invites us to make the gospel and our relationship with him the most important thing in our lives. Why? Because there is nothing more valuable than to know Jesus. It’s like winning the lottery every day!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, remind me to make the main thing the main thing in my life! There is nothing more important than knowing you as my Savior and growing in my faith. I pray that I will give you the time and devotion that you deserve, in my heart and in my mind and on my calendar. I ask this in your name. Amen.
