Matthew 17:14-20: 14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”  17 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

There is a story in the gospel of Mark where Jesus challenges a man to believe that he can heal his son. The man replies to Jesus and says, “I do believe. Help me overcome my unbelief.” These are the words that came to my mind this morning when I read this story.

Jesus challenges his disciples to have faith like a mustard seed and they can move mountains. He even calls them an unbelieving and perverse generation, because they could not drive out the demon from this boy. Jesus had given them the power to do that, but they had doubted Jesus’ promise and authority and were not able.

Where do your doubts lie? Sometimes, when I minister to the lost and straying sheep, I doubt that it will do any good. Why do I doubt the power of the gospel? Sometimes, when I’ve worked with people suffering from addictions, I’ve wondered if that person can ever get well again. And sometimes, when I want to drive out the “demons” in my own life, I feel like nothing but a failure. Why do these sins keep creeping back into my life?

“Lord, I do believe.  Help me overcome my unbelief!”  Even such small faith in my heart in a big and compassionate Savior can do wonders that I cannot imagine.

Prayer:    Lord, I do believe! Help me overcome my unbelief! If I believed in you with all my heart, I would not struggle with sin in my life, or despair, or doubts.  I do believe.  I believe in your mercy. I believe in your ability to grow even such a small faith as mine. I believe that you will not snuff out a smoldering wick or a bruised stem like me.  I do believe. Help me overcome my unbelief. Amen.
