Matthew 21:12-13: 12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

Jesus shows in this story a righteous anger. There is a place for righteous anger. When God sees the poor oppressed by the rich, it makes him angry. When he sees people taking advantage of the widows and orphans, or simply neglecting them, it makes him angry. And when God sees his house of worship turned into a marketplace, where people are taking advantage of, it makes him angry. Jesus was justified in his anger.  And in becoming angry with the money changers in the temple, Jesu was fulfilling the fifth commandment for us.

Some things should make us angry, too, and they are the same things that make our God in heaven angry. It made me angry when two women gossipped about a third woman in church. When the woman overheard them, she stopped coming to church altogether. It made me angry when I met a man who lived in a trailer park with six other men. His landlord charged each of them $200 a piece for rent in a trailer that should have been rented for less than $300. It makes me angry to know that children with a bright future can be ripped from a woman’s womb without any consideration for their right to future. Some things should make us angry.

But we have to be careful with our anger, because unlike Jesus, we have a sinful nature that will take advantage of even our righteous anger and make us boil over into unrighteous words and actions. This is why we find comfort in this story. Jesus’ righteous anger is what covers me and makes me holy in the sight of God, even though God’s righteous anger should convict me of my sins.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank you for reminding me today that you are still God in heaven who is angry when the poor are oppressed, the needy are neglected, and the innocent are taken advantage of.  I should be angry about those things as well. Forgive me for not caring as much as I should, and for letting my anger boil over into sin in inappropriate ways.  Amen.
