Matthew 22:41-46: 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, 44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’ 45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

This passage beautifully teaches the two natures of the Christ. He is the Son of David and fully human. He is also the Son of God and rightfully called, “Lord,” the name used most commonly for our Savior God in the Old Testament.  The Lord (God, the Father) said to MY Lord (the Messiah), “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”  Jesus is the Son of David and the Son of God. He rose from the dead and ascended into heaven and sits at God’s right hand.

What will you do with Jesus? In these chapters in Matthew that we have studied, you are forced to ask yourself that question over and over again. Is he your role model? He is much, much more than that. Is he your teacher? Absolutely, and the way he answers the questions of the Sadducees and Pharisees proves that no one is a better teacher. But he is more than that. Is he our friend in time of trouble? Yes, and more than that. Is he the one that rescues you from your sin, the one who gave his life as a payment for your guilty verdict? Absolutely. And his resurrection and ascension show that he is even more than that.

When Thomas put his fingers into the wounds of Jesus, he declared, “My Lord and my God!” We should be as amazed as Thomas was every day. My God has become my friend and brother. My God has become my Savior. What will you do with Jesus? Believe in him. Worship him.

Prayer:  My Lord and my God!  Let me not forget this blessed truth that you are fully human and fully divine in one person.  I worship you. I adore you. I trust in you for my salvation and everything else. Here is my prayer today. Keep me from believing in myself by increasing my faith in you. Amen.
