Matthew

Listen: Matthew 5:13-16:   13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Don’t miss a the key principle in Jesus’ metaphors of salt and light. Citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven impact society because they are different (not weird or bizarre but distinct) from the Kingdom of this World. When salt and light try to accommodate to and/or be conformed by the Kingdom of this World, they lose their distinctiveness and their potential to impact the decay and the darkness of the this world which is passing away.  We are salt in a rotting world.  We are light in a dark world.

How are you doing? Are you really living like a Christian? Are you using your money like a Christian? Are you talking like a Christian? Are you conducting your family like a Christian? Are you using your leisure time like a Christian? Does the language change when you are around? Does the attitude of the workplace improve because you work without complaining, you show up on time, you treat everyone with kindness, you refuse to enter into gossip?

Jesus says, “You ARE salt and light.”  He doesn’t say that you should be, but that you are. The Spirit working in you has changed you so that sometimes you don’t seem to fit in this world at all.  I once had a member tell me that she didn’t think the workers in the lunchroom wanted her to sit with them, because when she sat down at their table, they just stopped talking. You are salt and you are light.  Don’t be ashamed of it!

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, help me to remember that I can make a difference in my world, and that my life will give glory to my Father in heaven. I pray that I could do this in such a way that people will not want to avoid me, but so that I can give reason for the hope that I have in you. Keep me from hiding that light that shines in me through you. Amen.

Matthew

Listen: Matthew 5:17-20:  “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

The Pharisees had the same criticisms of Jesus’ ministry that Paul dealt with in his letters to the Galatians and others. Namely, if salvation is by grace alone and free, aren’t you inviting people to think they don’t have to keep the commandments at all?  Jesus teaches us here that just the opposite is true! In fact, almost the whole sermon on the mount shows you what the law really means if you are taking it seriously and from the heart, rather than just obeying the letter of the law.  The Pharisees were good at keeping the law on the outside, but on the inside, their hearts were just as full of sin as anyone else. So as Jesus does a review of the Ten Commandments in the Sermon on the Mount, he will show us what it means to keep the Ten Commandments from the heart.

So how does our righteousness surpass that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law?  They were very careful about keeping the commandments. I doubt if I would measure up to them. Except, I have a righteousness that they didn’t have. I believe in Jesus and I am covered with his righteousness, which is the only righteousness that counts before God.  More, I am motivated by that righteousness to obey the law, not because I have to, but because I want to. And when my obedience comes from the heart, my righteousness will surpass that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law.

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, teach me to see that the only righteousness that I will ever want or need is the righteousness that is by faith in you. My righteousness counts for nothing before God!  At the same time, give me a heart that sees in every commandment an opportunity to show my love for you and my love for my neighbor, so that by my live, you will be glorified. Amen.
