Matthew 15
Matthew 15: 10-14: 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand.11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” 13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
Why were the Pharisees offended by what Jesus said? It was because Jesus had called them “unclean.” If there was anything that a Pharisee did, he meticulously avoided touching and even being close to anything that was unclean, like lepers or dead bodies or unclean food. That’s why they washed their hands before they ate, just in case they had touched someone who touched someone who was unclean.
Jesus teaches us something very important in these words. It’s not what goes into our mouths that makes us unclean, but what comes out of them. In the book of James, we get a picture of how hard it is to control our tongues and what comes out of our mouths. Slander. Foul language. Critical remarks that are unnecessary. Juicy gossip. Proud words. And in the case of the Pharisees, false teaching as well. They were like the blind leading the blind.
Jesus will always offend our sinful natures. We don’t like to hear that we are unclean. But how else will we know that we cannot save ourselves? How else will we know that we desperately need a Savior?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, speak boldly to my sinful heart and crush the pride that is in me! But when you have broken my spirit, then lift me up with the precious message of the gospel that declares all my sins forgiven. Only when I have been washed in your blood will I be truly clean! Amen.
Matthew 15
Matthew 15: 15-20: 15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
School shootings. Parents keeping their children in cages. Clergy abusing children that trust them. Seemingly well adjusted teenagers committing suicide. Adults gambling away their families home and savings account. What’s the question that people ask when they hear stories like this in the news? “How could anyone do such a thing?”
If you think you are above doing something awful, then you are wrong. You are not above it at all. In fact, these sins lurk in the hidden corners of your heart, in your sinful nature. Listen to the list that Jesus makes. Murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. The Bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart, and yet he committed adultery with Bathsheba and murdered her husband to cover up his affair. Where did that come from? From within his sinful heart. Everyone of us is capable of any sin at any time.
At the same time, we have a new person inside of us that is created to be like God. That’s why every day is a battle. My new self wants what God loves and my old self wants what God hates. Be thankful that Jesus has given us the victory over sin by his death and resurrection. At the same time, never let your guard down. When you hear of the terrible things that people do, repent of the evil desires in your heart and flee to the throne of God’s grace for mercy and strength.
Prayer: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. Amen. (Psalm 51:10-12 – David’s Prayer)
