Matthew 26

Matthew 26:5763:  57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. 59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” 62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.

Isaiah 53: 7:He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.”  We see Isaiah’s prophecy fulfilled as Jesus stood at his trial before the high priest. They made one false accusation after another, but he did not open his mouth.  He did not protest his innocence because his accusers were unable to prove him guilty.

Jesus’ innocence is important. They were watching Jesus all the time, hoping to catch him in doing even one thing wrong. They posed difficult questions, questions to trap him, yet they could not find fault with him. Can you imagine someone watching you so closely? It wouldn’t take long at all to find fault with something you did or failed to do. They couldn’t find fault with Jesus, because he never did anything wrong.

This is important because Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5: “God made him who knew no sin to become sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Jesus took our sin and he gave us his righteousness. That “great exchange” is our hope before God. We don’t have any sins, because Jesus took them from us. We are full of goodness and holiness, because Jesus’ innocence is my innocence.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank you for your whole innocent and beautiful life that even made your Father in heaven wonder and say, “In him I am well pleased.”  When I see my imperfect life, my faith looks up to you, my perfect Savior. By faith in you, I know that my Father is pleased with me also, because he sees your righteousness. What a joy it is to live in the peace of knowing this!  Amen.
