Matthew 27:19-23: While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. 21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.

“Barabbas,” they answered. 22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” 23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

Have you ever been in the middle of an angry mob? I was once. I turned a corner walking down the street in Oaxaca, Mexico, when suddenly a mob of 30,000 angry teachers marched up the street to protest low wages before governor’s residence. Since I was staying in the house across the street from the governor’s residence, I had to find my way through the mob.  Not fun. Scary.  When you picture this scene before Pilate, picture the angry mob demonstrating and forcing its will on Pilate. Pilate would do anything to defuse the moment.  He offered them Jesus or Barabbas, the innocent one or the guilty one.

And that, dear friends, gives us a beautiful picture of our salvation. The innocent one is condemned and the guilty go free. It was not the will of the mob that carried Jesus to the cross, but the will of his heavenly Father. What crime has he committed?  None at all. What crime did he pay for? All the sins which we have committed. We deserve to be condemned to an eternity in hell for the sins we’ve committed. Instead, God chose to punish Jesus in our place. The innocent Son of God is condemned, and the guilty go free.

Do not feel guilty that God laid your sins on Jesus.  Jesus would not want you to feel guilty, because he chose to do this for you. Rejoice! Be thankful! Be determined in your heart to live a life worthy of the calling you have as a child of God, redeemed and made holy by the blood of Jesus.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, you were condemned so that I might go free! How awesome is your love that you would do such a thing for me!  Here my prayer today. Let me live my life to your glory and honor, and always be my reason for choosing not to sin.  Amen.
