Matthew 28:1-4: After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
Each gospel writer gives slightly different accounts of the resurrection. Some would argue that their accounts are not accurate. I think that just the opposite is true. If policemen investigate an accident that took place, and every single person has the exact same story with the exact same details, they will suspect the story was concocted so that everyone said the same thing. Real witnesses see different things and report them in different ways. Their stories can be true without being contradictory.
That’s especially true when you consider the chaos of that Easter morning. The women went to the tomb, but did they all come together and arrive at the same time? I don’t think so. They probably decided to meet at the tomb at dawn. Whether they saw one angel as Matthew reports, or two angels as Luke reports, maybe the result of when they got there. Or the one angel could have been outside the tomb and other inside. We should not think that these details mean that there are contradictions in the story. These small differences only verify that different people saw different things at different times and reported what they saw and remembered. Real eye-witness accounts are rarely identical.
And the fact that Matthew reports that the women were the first to witness the resurrection only supports that these were eyewitness accounts. Someone making up a story would have certainly put the disciples there first, especially in an age when women were not considered to be reliable witnesses. These women who witnessed his burial were the first to witness his resurrection. There is literally no other event in ancient history that has so many eyewitness accounts as the resurrection of Jesus!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for giving us so many eyewitness accounts of your resurrection! My faith is not founded on a myth or a lie, but on fact and truth. Help me to proclaim the truths of your death and resurrection to as many people as I can! Amen.
