Hebrews 5: 7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
“During his life on earth” is a wonderful way to describe how the Son of God came down from heaven to save us. His prayers and tears showed his reverent submission to his Father’s will. But what does it mean that he learned obedience and was made perfect? Think of it this way. Imagine that in your life, you have to fill your bucket with good works and with perfect obedience. From the time you are born, that’s what your life’s goal is. Do everything God wants you to do and do nothing which God forbids. Of course, because of sin, your bucket leaks like a sieve. And who can imagine how many opportunities we have missed in doing God to others?
Jesus filled his bucket. He learned obedience by what suffered, obeying even when it was hard. And he was made perfect. In other words, he filled up his bucket. Even while he hung on the cross, he was obeying and not sinning. He helped his mother. He forgave his enemies. He offered words of hope to the thief. The perfect Son of God completed his “bucket list.”
And then? He gave you his bucket to present to God in place of your empty bucket. He became the source of eternal salvation to all who believe in him. Any thought that our efforts can save us will only cause despair. We trust in Jesus, in his forgiveness and in his righteousness. That is our hope before God!Prayer: Thank you, Son of God, most Holy, for coming into this world and living a perfect life of obedience for me! You are my hope and salvation! Let this be my bucket list in life, that I live every day to give glory to you alone. Amen.
