Hebrews 10: 36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37 For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.” 38 And, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
The writer quotes from Habakkuk from the Septuagint translation (Greek, 200 B.C.). The Hebrew is interesting. It could be translated, “The righteous by faith will live,” or “The righteous will live by faith.” The first emphasizes that those who believe will live eternally. The second emphasizes that those who believe will live their lives according to that faith. I think that God the Holy Spirit intended for us to understand this verse in both ways.
If you understand it in both ways, then the words from Hebrews above makes perfect sense. We live by faith, which means we believe we are saved by faith and we wait for Jesus to come again. That affects everything in our life. We don’t put our hope in this world or in the things of this world. We don’t live for ourselves. We live for Jesus and for our neighbor.
My brother once stood in line at a convenience store when the lottery was in the hundreds of millions. When asked if he wanted to buy a ticket, he declined. “Don’t you want to have a chance to win all that money?” she asked. “No,” he replied, “I am happy just the way I am.” And she said, “Where do you live?”
What she should have asked is, “Why?” It’s not where we live but why we live. We live by faith in Jesus, and we wait for him to come again! That changes everything!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are mine and I am yours! You have redeemed me for time and for eternity to live under you in your kingdom. I cannot wait until that day comes when I am with you in glory! But for the time of my life, let me live each day, not for myself, but for you. Keep me from the anxieties of this life so that I do not shrink back. I ask this in your name. Amen.
