Hebrews 11: Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
In the last verses of chapter 10, we learned that the “righteous will live by faith.” In chapter 11, the writer to the Hebrews shows us what the righteous life of a righteous believer looks like. But he starts with a beautiful definition of faith. Faith is being confident in what we hope for. Faith is being sure of what we don’t see. Faith is understanding, not by experience and by test-tube tests, that God made the universe by simply commanding it into existence from nothing.
Believing that God created the world is so important in our Christian faith, because it tells the story of our salvation from the beginning. God made a perfect world with two perfect people who rebelled and sinned. Then God promised a Savior who would redeem them and save them. The rest of the Bible carries out that story until we see God’s Son dying on a cross and rising again in victory.
But if God didn’t create the world or our perfect parents, then what of sin? If evolution is the way we came to be, there was no fall. Man is only getting better all the time. Only, that’s not true. Are we smarter than Egyptians who built the pyramids? Or the Mayans who had a calendar figured out for two million years? Are we more moral than the people whom we find in this chapter? I have had people tell me the Bible is a horrible book filled with all kinds of war and atrocities. When they say this, I simply respond by saying, “You mean, worse than the Holocaust? Worse than a nuclear bomb?”
Our generation needs a Creator God and a Savior God as much as and even more so than ever before. And by faith, we have confidence in our future and are sure of those things we cannot see.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, Light devine, shine within this heart of mine! Give me a faith that is sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see! Then, confident that I am God’s child forever, let me live my faith and shine as a light in this sinful world. Amen.
