Hebrews 11: 5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
I remember the funeral sermon for my great uncle, Orpie, who lived with us on the family farm. He struggled with alcohol all of his life. Well, not quite all. He quit drinking the year before he died. He was a faithful worker on the farm, though. Sometimes he bought us candy or took us fishing. In spite of his drinking, he went to church every Sunday where he grew up. The story of Enoch was the pastor’s funeral sermon text. It made me look at what Orpie was on the inside and not on the outside.
We walk with God when we believe in the Savior and not in ourselves. Not much is said about Enoch, except that he walked with God, and that he warned the people of their unbelief and prophesied about God’s judgment (Jude 14). Yet God chose to take him to heaven without experiencing death. Only he and Elijah experienced this. Why just those two? God could have chosen any number of believers, or any believer for that matter, because Enoch and Elijah were saved by faith, just as we are saved. The story of Enoch and Elijah gave people in the Old Testament especially hope that there is life after death.
Perhaps the most important lesson in these verses is this. “And without faith it is impossible to please God.” The righteous live by faith. A simple life lived by faith is pleasing to God. So don’t judge the book by its cover. The story of a person’s life is what it on the inside and is a book that only God can read.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, walk with me and I will walk with you! Remind me that it is not my accomplishments that save me, but only faith in you alone. Let me live this day and every day by faith. Make me bold to testify to my generation that you will come again in glory so that they may find hope in you before that day comes. Amen.
