Hebrews 11: 13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
The story that comes to mind as I read these verses is not a story of faith, but a story of unbelief. Remember Lot’s wife? They were told to flee the city of Sodom and Gomorrah and not look back. As they fled to the mountains and fire rained down on the city, Lot’s wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt. She couldn’t bear to leave her nice home in the city behind.
You’ve heard the expression, “Home is where the heart is.” But that begs another question. Where is your home? For God’s people, our home is not here in his life or on this earth. We are citizens of a better country, a heavenly one. Jesus gave us such a beautiful promise in John 14. ““In my Father’s house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that you may also be where I am.”
The righteous live by faith. We consider our home here lackluster and poor compared to the home that God has prepared for us in heaven. We know this is a fallen world and filled with sorrows and we wait for our life to be changed in a moment when Jesus comes again and glorifies us. This world offers us lots of shiny pennies, but that’s all that they are. Just pennies. Our real treasure is in heaven.
Prayer: Even so, Lord Jesus, come! Come quickly! I long to be at rest with you forever, to experience a life that knows no sorrow or disappointment. Keep my eyes and especially my heart focused on you and on my heavenly home so that they glittery offerings of this world will not tempt me. I ask this in your name. Amen.
