1 Corinthians 5: 12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.” (EHV)

You will often hear people say, “The Bible teaches us not to judge one another.” That’s not really true. Jesus teaches us in the Sermon on the Mount not to judge people in the wrong way and for the wrong reasons. He tells us to remove the plank from our own eye before we criticize our neighbor for the speck in his eye. He warns against judging others like the Pharisees did, without showing mercy, and for making themselves look good in their own eyes.

Jesus also tells us that there are times we SHOULD judge people. In the Sermon on the Mount, he warns us to look out for false prophets, who dress like sheep, but are wolves on the inside. Exposing false teaching is a form of judging. In Matthew 18, Jesus tells us to point out our brother’s sin so that we might win him back for the kingdom. That’s judging, too, but it is down for the right motive, out of love for our brother’s soul.  When Jesus drove the money changers out of the temple, he was judging them.

Paul gives us more insight.  He says it is not our business to judge people outside the church, but inside the church. Think of it.  All those things we say over the dinner table about how terrible the world is has not effect on the world at all. It only makes us feel more righteous in our own eyes. It’s more beneficial to hold ourselves accountable than to point out the sins of the world.

But in the end, there is one thing that separates judging which is good from judging which is evil. If we have the mind of Christ and the love of Christ, our judging will always be for good and not evil.

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, keep me from judging others just to make myself look good in my own eyes. At the same time, give me courage to point out evil when I see it and to proclaim the gospel to those who would hear it.  Amen.
