1 Corinthians 10: For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. (EHV)
Paul is going to warn the Corinthians in this chapter about rejecting the grace that God had given to them in Jesus by holding out to them the negative example of the people of Israel in the Old Testament. God showed his abundant mercy to them, but many of them fell along the way because of their unbelief.
But what strikes me most about these first verses is how Paul says that the spiritual rock which accompanied them was Christ. The people of the Old Testament were saved by the same Savior God that we are saved by, namely, Christ. It was only a matter of perspective in time. They were saved by the Savior that God promised to bring them, and we are saved by the Savior that God HAS sent us.
Secondly, the Savior God who accompanied the children of Israel in the Old Testament is the same God who accompanies us today. He is always with us through all of our earthly pilgrimage. He is with us when times are good and when they are not so good. He provides for us on our journey as he sees fit, never giving us more than we can handle or less than we need. His mercies are new to us every morning, and he is faithful in all that he does. This is the message that comes through loud and clear when you read the story of God’s people through the Old Testament.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, be with us each day according to your promise, and fill our hearts with an awareness of your goodness and mercy. Keep our hearts from being unhappy or discontent or drawn away by the temptations of this world. We pray this in your name. Amen.
