1 Corinthians 10: 14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf. (EHV)
Tomorrow we’ll look at the connection between the Lord’s Table and fleeing idolatry. But today, Paul speaks volumes to us about the Lord’s Supper. The bread is a participation in the body of Christ. The cup is a participation in the blood of Christ. Paul so clearly tells us that when we come to the Lord’s Table, we receive both bread and wine and the body and blood of Christ at the same time. Luther said it well when he said that the body and blood of Christ are “in, with, and under” the bread and wine.
What a wonderful thing this is! Jesus gives himself to us in a special way in this sacrament, assuring us that our sins are forgiven through his sacrifice on the cross. When the pastor tells me that my sins are forgiven in the absolution, I might reason to myself that he is speaking to someone else, but not to me. But when Jesus comes to us in the sacrament, he comes to us personally. He tells me in my heart that my sins are forgiven, even mine, together with all who join me at this table and have become one with me in faith. What a beautiful sermon Christ preaches to me every time I come to us table!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for this blessed sacrament, in which I am connected with you and all believers in you through your body and blood, given and poured out for us for the forgiveness of our sins. Let me come to your table with a penitent heart. and leave with a heart that is forgiven, restored, renewed, and refreshed. In your name pray. Amen.
