1 Corinthians 12: Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were deceived and somehow led away to mute idols. 3 Therefore I am informing you that no one speaking by God’s Spirit says, “A curse be upon Jesus,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. (EHV)

I can imagine that in the Corinthian congregation, almost all of the people worshipping there, besides a few Jewish converts, had converted from one pagan religion or another. I would imagine that people would sometimes wonder if a particular convert was “really” a Christian or not. You could actually ask the question of any one of us today because who can see the faith in a person’s heart? Only God can.

So Paul reminds the Corinthians of a simple measure of faith when we cannot look into a person’s heart to see what they believe. We simply listen to their confession of faith or unbelief. If a person curses Jesus, then that person cannot be a Christian, because the Holy Spirit could not possibly be speaking through them. And if a person says, “Jesus is Lord,” and acknowledges that Jesus is both God and their Savior, then the person is speaking by the Holy Spirit.

Of course, there are always hypocrites, but we cannot judge anyone’s heart – only their words and actions. I am thankful today that the Holy Spirit has worked faith in my heart and dwells within me. For I know that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him.

Prayer:   Thank you, Spirit of God, that you have called me from the darkness of unbelief to the light of faith through the gospel. I pray that you will continue to work in my heart daily so that my faith may grow, and so that my confession of the gospel may remain true. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
