1 Corinthians 12: 8 To one person a message of wisdom is given by the Spirit; to another, a message of knowledge, as the same Spirit provides it; 9 by the same Spirit, faith is given to someone else; and to another, the same Spirit gives healing gifts. 10 Another is given powers to do miracles; another, the gift of prophecy; another, the evaluating of spirits; someone else, different kinds of tongues; and another, the interpretation of tongues. 11 One and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them to each one individually as he desires. (EHV)
This is by no means an exhaustive list of gifts given by the Spirit. Paul had a list of gifts in Romans 12, and it looks very different from this list. Some of these gifts still benefit the church today, and others seemed to be present only in the time of the apostles. For example, he mentions gifts like miracles and healing and speaking in different kinds of tongues, as the disciples did on the day of Pentecost. Professor David Vallesky called these gifts “confirmatory” gifts. These were gifts, he said, that confirmed the work and the message of the apostles in the early church. Those gifts stuck around for a while and were even gifts found in congregations like Corinth. Although, Paul doesn’t really speak of these gifts in his letters to the other congregations.
A number of years ago, there was a large movement in the Christian church called the “charismatic movement.” It claimed that all these gifts should still be present in the church today, if the church claimed to be the true church. I knew a woman who became involved in such a church. She was told that she wasn’t really a Christian because she could not speak in tongues. She was in such despair, she even thought of taking her life, when a friend pointed her to Ephesians 2:8-9 and showed her she was saved by faith and not by works.
Nowhere in the Bible does it say that every Christian must possess these gifts, or that they will be present in every congregation of believers. The Spirit gives his gifts to individuals and to his church as he wills. He does it to bless us and to give us opportunities to serve on another in love. Rather than boast about our gifts, we use them to God’s glory and to serve on another.
Prayer: Thank you, Holy Spirit, for the gifts you give to your Church. I have seen people use their gifts for language to reach out to people of different tongues. I have seen people with wisdom in matters of business and finance use their gifts to lead their congregations to make wise decisions. I have seen people with great knowledge in Scripture teach the teachers, and those with practical wisdom guiding the ministries of the congregation. Thank you for all the gifts you give to your Church! Amen.
