1 Corinthians

Listen: 1 Corinthians 15: Brothers, I am going to call your attention to the gospel that I preached to you. You received it, and you took your stand on it. 2 You are also being saved by that gospel that was expressed in the words I preached to you, if you keep your hold on it—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.  (EHV)

I have been waiting for this chapter since I started Corinthians because of its powerful message of the resurrection, which is at the heart of the gospel. I remember fondly sitting on Joel’s bed a week before he died and going through this chapter with him. Joel had been the husband of a member of my first church, someone not really interested in God at the time. I invited myself to go fishing with him just to get to know him better and share Jesus with him. When I was climbing out of his boat, I stepped on his two favorite fishing poles and broke them. Not long after, he moved out of the area and I lost touch with him.

Twenty years later I was at a pastoral conference in the city where he had moved. A man came up the aisle before church, with tears in his eyes. It was Joel and he thanked me for bringing the gospel to him. He had often told his friends about the clumsy pastor who shared Jesus with him.

Joel got cancer, and a week before he died, I traveled to see him one last time before he died. He was so weak that he could no longer get out of bed. I sat on his bed and made small talk for a few minutes, and Joel said, “Let’s not waste our time, Pastor. Let’s just study 1 Corinthians 15 together.” So for the next 45 minutes, that is what we did.

Someday I will see Joel in heaven and we will spend some time together. Maybe we will even go fishing, if you can do that in heaven. Or maybe we won’t waste our time but simply enjoy soaking in the radiance of God’s glory in the face of our risen and exalted Savior.

Prayer:   Gracious Savior, risen Lord, you have given hope to my darkness and light to my future with you and all the saints in heaven.  Remind me that I have been buried with you in your death and been raised to life with you so that I can walk in newness of life now and forever. Amen.
