1 Corinthians
Listen: 1 Corinthians 15: 9 For I am the least of the apostles, and I am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted God’s church. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not ineffective. On the contrary, I worked more than all of them (and yet it wasn’t my doing, but it was the grace of God, which was with me, that did it). 11 So whether it is I or they, that is what we preach, and that is what you believed. (EHV)
You might say that Paul never got over his past. Imagine, he persecuted God’s Church. Christians were dead because of Paul. He held the coats of the man who stoned Stephen, gloating in his not-so-righteous anger. And then he says, “But by the grace of God, I am what I am.” Which was? A redeemed child of God. A saint in God’s kingdom. A righteous man, not by his own works, but because he was clothed with the righteousness of Jesus. He was even an apostle and chosen by God to build the Church which he tried to destroy.
Don’t ever think that God can’t change you. First of all, he already has. He has changed who you are in his eyes. He sees you, not as the sinner you used to be and still are. He sees you as a saint whose robes have been washed in the blood of the Lamb. You are heavenbound and not hellbound. You are blessed and not cursed. You are a child of God, and not a child of the devil.
Don’t ever think that God can’t change you. If you believe in Jesus, he already has. You may still be struggling with sins in your life, but you are struggling. You have not given in to them. In fact, you hate sin with a passion, which is why your sins make you feel so terrible. Don’t you see that this is God’s grace working in you?
“By the grace of God, I am what I am.” And what is that? I am a child of God, a saint in God’s eyes.
Prayer: Gracious Savior, risen Lord, by grace alone I am what I am! Thank you for redeeming me and making me your own, and for clothing me with your righteousness. Now continue to work in me by your grace so that I will glorify you by my life. Amen.
