1 Corinthians 15: 42 That is the way the resurrection of the dead will be. What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown as a natural body; it is raised as a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. (EHV)

What will it be like for us in the resurrection? While Paul doesn’t go into great depths to tell us what it will look like and feel like, he does draw some comparisons between our earthly  body and our heavenly, or “spiritual” body. He doesn’t just say “spirit,” but calls it a “spiritual body.”  So it is a real body, but it will defy the laws of physics as we know it in this body we have.

The most important rule of physics for this physical body is that we are wearing out or aging. No abundance of creams or medicines can reverse that process or halt it. No one has found the “fountain of youth.” If anyone could, then they would quickly become trillionaires. And this is where Paul draws the contrast. What is sown is perishable and weak. It is raised imperishable and in power. One of the best things about heaven is that it will be forever.

It is sown in dishonor and it is raised in glory. Look at that body in the casket. While that elderly person is made up and looks quite nice, we know that in fact death does not look pretty at all. But we will be raised in glory. I don’t know if we will look young or have wrinkles, because those things won’t make any difference. But our bodies will be glorified.

“When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun.”  Maybe in heaven I’ll learn to play the violin. But before I do, Strativarius will help me build my own. We’ll have all the time in the world to do whatever brings us joy. So who needs that bucket list for the here and now?

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, I look forward to heaven and being with you, which is better by far. But for now, you have chosen to let me remain here. Let me use my days here to serve you and praise you and glorifiy your name. Amen.
