1 Corinthians 15: 58 Therefore, my dear brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. (EHV)
Don’t overlook the “therefore” that begins this sentence. Based on all that we have learned about Jesus’ resurrection and our waiting for our own, how does that affect our life in this world? Paul uses three words. He tells us to be “steadfast.” The NIV translates it as “stand firm,” which is what “steadfast” means if you take it apart.
In the face of this pandemic that we are confronting, what does that mean? It means that I know that eternal life is mine, so I don’t have to fear the “worst case scenario” that everyone talks about. During this lockdown of churches, I will be in the Word with my family. I will not let Satan lesson my desire to worship with other Christians. When it is over, I will will gather with God’s people with joy again.
Paul also tells us to be “immovable.” Normally, stubbornness is not seen as an admirable trait. But when it comes to our faith in Jesus, stubborness is a great attribute to have. I will stubbornly hold onto what I believe no matter the world says. I will not give an inch when it comes to the truth of the gospel. There can be no compromise on truth.
Paul tells us to be “always abounding in the Lord’s work.” The word means to overflow with something. It’s investing myself, my time and my energies, on those things that are most important. It’s seeking God’s kingdom and his righteousness, knowing that all these things will be added to us as well.
Finally, Paul encourages us with these words. “Your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” When I’ve visited that in active member the sixth time, when I have counseled with the married couple for months, when I have prayed for my straying brother, it’s important to remember these words. It is never in vain. It is never “for nothing.” Why? Because Jesus rose from the dead!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, let my life be defined, not by who I am and by what I have done, but by who YOU are and by what YOU have done. Fill my heart with Easter joy and hope, knowing that nothing I do for you will ever be for nothing. Amen.
